From aesthetic surgery to help with body problem areas

Many of us notice something in our face and body when we look in the mirror that we would like to change or improve. It can be a wrinkle on the face, a double chin, excessive sweating of the armpits or excess fat in the abdominal area that is difficult to get rid of. If you feel that some part of your body is making your physical, mental and social well-being even more difficult, talk to an expert doctor about it. The method can be, for example, an aesthetic surgical procedure or an injection treatment.

Aesthetic surgery is a branch of plastic surgery. Plastic surgery also includes reconstructive plastic surgery, which treats many different diseases such as breast and skin cancer, congenital developmental disorders, severe wound problems and burns and soft tissue injuries. Embarking on aesthetic surgery is usually not connected to health reasons.

- Very common reasons for seeking treatment are eyelid problems, such as drooping eyelids, facial changes caused by aging, or things related to the shaping of the breasts and tummy, says plastic surgeon Terhi Järvinen from Mehiläinen.

Attitudes towards cosmetic surgery are changing, but there may be prejudices. This is often due to foreign programs and pictures where we see surgical operations gone wrong and body modifications carried out to the extreme. When looking at these, however, you should remember that they are not always made by a professional plastic surgeon.

When considering an aesthetic procedure, it is of primary importance to consult your doctor first. But how do you know that a plastic surgeon is trustworthy? As a general rule, at least in Finland, surgeons trained have good skills and know their own expertise, and refer to another colleague if necessary. If you want to verify the educational background of a Finnish doctor, you can check it at julkiTerhik, which is maintained by Valvira. On the other hand, it is more difficult to find out the background if you seek treatment abroad.

What is the difference between surgery and injection treatment?

Aesthetic surgery is surgical treatment, which is always a bigger deal than outpatient filler treatment. If you want a significant change in your appearance, it usually cannot be achieved with injection treatments, but surgery is required.

- However, if you are looking forward to surgery, you can get a nice little boost to your appearance with just a needle treatment. Of course, there are things that can be treated just by cutting, says Terhi Järvinen.

- On the other hand, there are also things that make sense to treat only with injections. These matters must be negotiated at the reception, Terhi Järvinen continues.

For example, Botox treatment is generally a very good help for excessive sweating of the armpits.

All procedures, including injection treatments, are always accompanied by the possibility of complications. There are also patients for whom, for example, Botox is not recommended due to other diseases. For this reason, always before the first treatment session, the treatment should be planned at the plastic surgeon's office.

What is good to do before and after surgery?

It is good to prepare for the procedure in advance. Surgery always causes swelling and this can be prevented and reduced afterwards with lymphatic massage.

The lymphatic system moves fluids and waste materials in our body and defends it from bacteria, viruses and other substances that do not belong to the body. Lymphatic circulation can be invigorated by exercise and lymphatic massage. The massage is light, because too much weight causes the lymphatic vessels to collapse and the desired flow is not created.

- Swelling can be proactively prevented before surgery. For example, before upper eyelid surgery, you should come to a cosmetologist for a lymphatic massage, says specialist cosmetologist Susa Heimsch from Kauneuskeskus Pinjam.

Plastic surgeon Terhi Järvinen also recommends applying lymph before surgery.

- Lymphatic treatment very well supports recovery from, for example, eyelid surgery. You should visit the treatment within a week before the operation and a few times after the operation.

Checklist before the facial procedure:

  • Have a facial 2 weeks before surgery.
  • Clean and permanently color the corners if you wish.
  • If you wish, bend and/or permanently dye your eyelashes.
  • Take facial lymph 1-2 times within a week.
  • Buy a cold bath at home.
  • Treat the skin around the eyes and your face carefully. You can get advice on this from your beautician.
  • Remember to drink water!

When you have booked a consultation appointment with a plastic surgeon, book Pinjam's shopping arm for individual treatment planning from Pirjo or Susa.

Who is aesthetic surgery suitable for?

In aesthetic surgery, some physical problem in the body is corrected. Aesthetic surgery is certainly suitable for any mentally balanced person who experiences a problem with their appearance. However, the most important thing is to remember that you should only shape your body for yourself, not for others.

Social pressure can cause self-esteem issues regarding appearance for some. With aesthetic surgery and injection treatments, one's body image changes and can at best have a positive effect on the quality of life, but correction does not always automatically strengthen a person's self-image.

If you experience a problem with your appearance or the well-being of your body and are considering aesthetic surgery or injection treatments, always talk to your doctor first.
